Philippa Champain

Philippa Champain is a visual artist working in clay, based in Norwich. She holds a master's degree in Fine Art from Norwich University of the Arts, and previously worked as an art psychotherapist.

Her work examines the human condition through abstract forms, with an emphasis on the unsettling and uncanny. Originally a printmaker, her practice is now in ceramic sculpture, working in a variety of stoneware clays and experimental glazes using hand-built methods with a particular emphasis on surface. Some pieces are left unfired and sealed with wax.

She is drawn to texture and fracture, to what might emerge from dark spaces and crevices, and to incongruous relationships between disparate forms. Natural forms and organisms act as a resource when embarking on a new series of work.
