Sarah Russell
Sarah Russell is a printmaker working principally in monotype and monoprint, alongside collagraph and etching. After more than thirty years of practice she relocated to Norfolk in 2023, and now works from a studio in the Norfolk countryside. She exhibits regularly with the Printmakers Council.
Her 2026 exhibitions include Sum of the Parts at Westacre Gallery, Print Cromer 26 at Cromer Artspace, Wighton 26 at All Saints Church in Wighton, Breckland Open Studios, and the Mannington Nature Award with Holt Art Projects at Mannington Hall.
Artist Statement
I work principally in printmaking, usually making individual prints as part of a series. I find the immediacy and spontaneity of monotype particularly rewarding, with one-off prints that lend themselves to painterly and intuitive markmaking. For me, it's the most exciting medium. I love the constant tension between the solid and the translucent - the fixed and the fluid - the intellectual and the emotional.
The way I work is intuitive. I give expression to thoughts and feelings that unearth themselves, often whilst drawing en plein air. I fill up my brain with shapes and feelings so that I can unpack them later in the studio.
Getting out and drawing with no agenda is essential. Even non figurative art benefits from a solid grasp of an all too often overlooked aspect of the creative process. To me, the sketchbook is where you find the artist's most honest response.
