Ian St John Cross
Ian Cross is a painter and artist-filmmaker based in Norwich. His practice moves between painting, animation and experimental film, with a particular interest in chance, free association and the unexpected relationships that emerge between images.
Cross studied Fine Art before completing postgraduate studies in Film and Video at Central Saint Martins, where his early encounters with experimental filmmakers including Stan Brakhage, Len Lye, Malcolm Le Grice and Robert Breer helped establish an approach rooted in experimentation and discovery.
Alongside his art practice, he has worked for more than thirty years as an award-winning director, designer and animator across film and television. His work has been supported by Arts Council England and Channel 4 and has been exhibited and screened internationally.
Artist Statement
My work combines painting, drawing and moving image to produce images in flux through repetition, layering and erasure. Figures from old films, cartoons and popular culture collide with intuitive marks and fragments of text, designed to agitate and provoke rather than to reassure.
Working through free association, unexpected combinations generate atmospheres of tension, intimacy and unease. The work resists fixed narratives, inviting viewers to form their own associations within images that remain unresolved and open to shifting meanings.
