CORRESPONDENCE: Painting and Film by Ian St John Cross
10 Oct 2026 - 23 Oct 2026
Correspondence is a new solo exhibition by Norwich-based artist Ian St John Cross, bringing together a live-generated film installation and a new body of paintings.
Developed in parallel over the past several years, the works share a common process of free association, layering and repetition. Drawings, found imagery, fragments of film, text and sound are continually reworked, allowing unexpected relationships to emerge through both conscious decision-making and chance. Rather than presenting a fixed narrative, Correspondence invites viewers to discover their own connections between images as meaning shifts through context and juxtaposition.
At the centre of the exhibition is a generative film installation in which image and sound are assembled live by custom software, creating an ever-changing sequence where no two viewings are the same. Alongside the installation, the paintings develop from the same exploratory process, extending ideas generated through drawing and animation into physical form.
