Rachel Burchell
Rachel Burchell is an artist, facilitator and workshop tutor based in South Norfolk. Her art career came late, after twenty years as a primary school teacher. A foundation year at Artpocket, followed by a postgraduate year there, established this new direction, and she is a continuing member of the Artdepot NR3 artistic collective.
Working through foraging forays and natural pigments, she makes work that invites connection with inner and outer landscapes and an awareness of our place in the community of creation. Her work has been shown at Cley Marshes Visitor Centre for Norfolk Wildlife Trust, at Anteros Arts Foundation, where she held the solo exhibition, The ways I walk in 2024, in exhibitions at Wighton church and Cromer Artspace and with Artdepot NR3 at St Margaret's Church and St. Mary’s Works, Norwich.
She has tutored courses and workshops at Artpocket and Artdepot NR3, and for organisations across Norfolk, among them Creative Arts East, RSPB Strumpshaw Fen, Norfolk County Council, Norwich Science Festival and Norwich Cathedral Education. She has also secured funding to run Creative Nature 'pay what you can' and low cost workshops in her local community, connecting people to creativity and the natural world, for well-being.
Artist Statement
‘Crafting ways to listen, hearing all belongs’
The natural world has always been a place of solace for me. Walking, collecting, foraging responsibly are ways I become more present to nature and myself. Making and using natural inks, pigments and paper connect me further.
Mark making, collage, Cyanotype, layering and print are my predominant processes. I'm drawn to the overlooked, the unnoticed, the disregarded; finding the beauty in the overgrown, chaotic and disintegrating.
Nothing wasted is a guiding principle of my work.
