Carrie Clarke
Carrie Clarke is a multidisciplinary artist based in Norwich. Working across sculpture and mixed media, her practice explores history, culture and generational memory through the tactile investigation and manipulation of everyday materials. Her work is instinctive and hands-on, often pushing materials beyond their expected limits to create large scale forms that invite bodily engagement and interaction.
Clarke holds both a BA and MA in Fine Art from Norwich University of the Arts. In 2023, she was awarded the NCAS Fine Art Prize for her BA final project, received a Highly Commended award for the New Maker’s Prize and was a longlist artist for the Aesthetica Art Prize. Her work has been exhibited at the London Art Biennale at Chelsea Old Town Hall.
Following her MA show in September 2025, she is currently developing new sculptural work for group exhibitions in Pakefield and Norwich, and a solo show with 303 Projects, Lowestoft in 2027.
Artist Statement
My sculptural practice is driven by investigating and manipulating materials. I explore the material embodiment of history, memory and culture, investigating how materials carry traces of human experience. Working instinctively, I create a relationship with the material where the making is not entirely controlled but discovered through action.
This dialogue allows for an experience that spans time, giving material connection through generations - memory, touch, labour and culture. Using industrial and building materials reflects my interest in how we use and respond to modern, mass produced, man-made materials as well as natural, ancient ones.
Frequently large scale, these works have a stillness that holds weight and presence, creating their own environments for the viewer to physically engage with. This bodily encounter invites quiet consideration, one of pause, reflection and attentiveness and my current work has architectural and archaeological influences as a way of contemplating past, present and future.
