Poppy Jackson
Poppy Jackson works in performance, painting, sculpture and printmaking, and public space and architecture in relation to the body are her central concerns.
Jackson took a BA at Dartington College of Arts and an MA at Goldsmiths, University of London, and has held awards from the British Council. Her work has been presented at the Barbican and the Whitechapel Gallery in London, Grace Exhibition Space in New York, Defibrillator Performance Art Gallery in Chicago and the Spider International Festival of Dance in Ljubljana, and she has lectured at the Royal College of Art, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Jackson is an Associate Artist of ]performance s p a c e [. Live Art in Rural UK, a year-long commission (2023-4) from the Live Art Development Agency, culminated in the performance 'Tower' in Suffolk. Consistently supported by Arts Council England, her work is held in public and private collections worldwide.
Artist Statement
My practice claims the female body as an autonomous zone and an inherently political site. The raw, visceral energy of live performance is channeled into painting, printmaking, and drawing; at present, these pathways converge into sculpture, driving my aim to redefine rural figurative sculpture through matriarchal embodiment.
Raising my daughters in rural Suffolk, close to where I grew up, I continuously place my body in direct dialogue with the region's landscape and architecture. By positioning the maternal body as a site of agency and creative power, I attempt to shatter conservative ideas about femininity and public access.
I am dedicated to engaging public audiences and uniting regional artists. I have just founded BodyLand at Wyken Vineyards, where I open my studio to the public weekly. CONVERGE forms an East Anglian platform that cultivates critically engaged artistic connectivity as a social force.
