Craig Hudson

Craig Hudson is a figurative sculptor working in bronze. He combines elements modelled in clay, and fluid shapes made from expanding foam, with parts cast directly from real objects: his own hands and shoes, a balloon, a beach ball, a skateboard. His figures carry oversized hands and life-size trainers against roughly modelled faces, and he adds vivid colour to the finished bronze, allowing the paint to fall where it may, which is uncommon for the medium. Sometimes haunting, sometimes curious, sometimes comical, but always in your face. Bronze, however precious, is still a vessel for the artist's creative vision.

He was born in Ipswich in 1979 and spent ten years in the retail trade before studying at University Campus Suffolk, now the University of Suffolk, where he thought he was a painter until a tutor challenged him, saying "Craig, you really aren't a painter!"

He trained in bronze casting under his master, Laurence Edwards, going on to manage his studio, while working from Butley Mills Studios, honing his skills and finding his voice.

He now runs his own foundry in his studio, Craig Hudson Fine Art Foundry, at Sutton near Woodbridge, casting and mould making for other artists and teaching the process. You will find him beavering away, blasting some kind of metalcore to his heart's content.
