Rebecca Riess

Lossless, Riess' first institutional solo exhibition, is now on at Firstsite art gallery in Colchester.

Rebecca Riess was born in London in 1972. She received her BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore MD 1994 and MFA from Columbia University, School of The Arts, NYC 1996.

She has exhibited widely, both across the US (including LA, Chicago, NYC) and in Europe. In 2010 she moved to Suffolk, UK. Her practice involves drawing, painting, sculpture and stitching.

Artist Statement

Both political and deeply private, Riess' practice is simultaneously a reflection on the slow bubbling-through of pain - collective, social, individual - and its own act of processing. In partially glimpsed narratives, through the assembling and re-assembling of materials and ideas, she confronts contemporary political vacuums, patriarchal violence, and ecological catastrophe. Working across mediums - sculpture, painting, drawing, stitching - her work vibrates in a corrupted space of playfulness and disgust, seduction and subversion. This process combines formal enquiry with intuition and metaphor - constructed environments at once painfully familiar, playfully comical and disturbingly strange.
