John Crossley

John Crossley was born in Dagenham, Essex in 1952. He trained in sculpture at St Martin's School of Art in the early 1970s, then worked as assistant to Anthony Caro and as gallery manager at the Camden Arts Centre (1975-85). From the mid-1980s he taught at art schools across the UK and was senior lecturer at Chelsea College of Art for 30 years. He was elected a member of The London Group in 1978, of the Royal Watercolour Society in 2015 (full member 2017), and of the Small Paintings Group in 2021. He lives and works in Wangford, Suffolk. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in public and private collections worldwide, including the Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge), the Musée Picasso (Paris), Unilever PLC, Hillingdon Hospital and Evelina Children’s Hospital.

Artist Statement

Colour, paint, surface and form have been a continuous concern for the last 35 years. The work initially starts from observing the world around me, drawing and redrawing until ownership is established.
