Hilary Garner

Hilary Garner is an artist living and working in North Suffolk, painting mostly in oil and pastel while, like most artists, enjoying experiments in other media.

The return to art began with a memory. Years ago, Hilary met a man who had just retired and was about to go to university to study history, a subject he loved and something he had always wanted to do. The thought of having the time to follow a passion stayed with Hilary for twenty years, and eventually inspired a return to art.

That return started with a local village art group, followed by classes with several talented local artists. Having been persuaded not to go to art college as a teenager, Hilary had always felt something was missed, and so in 2019 joined the Diploma course at Anteros Arts Foundation in Norwich. The course opened up many new subjects and media, broadened Hilary's experience and helped settle where to focus. Hilary remains very grateful to the wonderful tutors met along the way, and continues to learn every day.

Today Hilary works from a much-loved private studio and exhibits in a number of galleries around East Anglia. A member of Suffolk Open Studios, Hilary opens the studio on selected weekends every June, and also runs a gallery in the barn at Holton Lodge, open from April to October.

Artist Statement

Observational and life drawing have improved my drawing skills immensely, and I have used this to inform my paintings. Having put down a good drawing as a basis, I like to use a combination of bold marks and an enhanced colour palette to create an expressive painting.

I am inspired by techniques used in photography to create interesting compositions by cropping subjects and using lighting. Some of my paintings have been created from collaborations with friends who take great photographs.

I also enjoy portraiture using oils and pastels, landscape, collage and abstract painting.
