JMCAnderson

JMCAnderson is an artist, curator and facilitator whose work is underpinned by her socially engaged practice. Her work explores identity, place and belonging through participatory experiences. She uses creative activism, text, audio, paint and performance within her work to investigate narratives and stories from the past, present and future. She is influenced by theories on semiotics and visual tautologies, where language is used both visually and linguistically within her work, to invite people in. Language becomes part of the object of enquiry and is used in order to translate ideas and concepts.

JMCA is also a community engagement professional, whose socially engaged practice overlaps with her strong experience in using inquiry-based methods to co-work and produce with an array of communities. Collaborative conversations and hands-on activities provide an ideal framework for process-based and conceptual ideas. Her focus on experimentation and structure, rather than a final outcome, lends itself to her interest in social discourse, collective thinking and its meaning-making process.

JMCAnderson (b. 1994) lives in Norfolk and works across East Anglia. She received her degree in Fine Art in 2016 and her Master's in Curation in 2017 from Norwich University of the Arts. She currently works for Ipswich Museum as its Community Engagement and Participation Officer (2023-2027), and has previously been Associate Curator for the 'We: You, Me' exhibition (2017) and Programme Assistant (2019-2020) at Firstsite, Creative Associate for 'Every Step Is A Different Height', directed by the artists Lone Twin (2021-2022), Exhibition Curator for the town-wide climate exhibition 'Manifesto' with Collusion (2022), Coordinator for The Young Norfolk Arts Trust (2020-2023) and Curator for the Norwich iteration of the touring exhibition Norman Kaplan: All Shall be Afforded Dignity (2024), among other roles. Her first solo show, at 303 Projects (2023), exhibited her most recent work, 'Crazy Coco', which went on to be performed at the London Art Fair (2024) and later exhibited at Milton Keynes Gallery (2024). She has facilitated an array of activities with co-creation at the forefront, winning a Special Recognition Award at the Norfolk Arts Awards (2022), and has been commissioned for works such as 'I Am...' as part of Norfolk & Norwich Festival (2021), 'In transit, our memory fragments' at Chelsea Space, London (2022) and 'Culture Connects' at PRIMEYARC, Great Yarmouth (2022).
