Kate Munro
Kate Munro is a sculptor and maker based at Oulton Street in Norfolk, working principally in hand-cut and found steel. She trained in sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art in the 1990s. Since graduating she has run community and participatory art projects for galleries, museums, arts organisations, schools and festivals around the country, and has undertaken public art commissions for hospitals, schools and country parks, among them the atrium installation 'Sea Air' at Cromer Hospital, an organ donor commission for Addenbrooke's Hospital, and extensive work at the Eden Project in Cornwall. With Arts Council funding she took on a workshop on the Blickling Estate, where she now makes her own body of work. Since 1993 she has collaborated with fellow sculptor Lisa Lindqvist on snow and ice sculpture for international festivals in China, Japan, Greenland, Russia and Sweden, and in 2023 and 2024 the pair were commissioned by the Ice Hotel in Sweden, making its Ceremony Hall from snow and ice in 2024. In 2013 she made the mirror-mosaic gorilla Bling Kong for the Go Go Gorillas trail in Norwich. She takes commissions for gates, fences, panels and signage at any scale.
Artist Statement
I am endlessly inspired by the seasons, and close, immersive observation of the more-than-human world. I love the process of making, often using found steel and a plasma cutter that enables me to explore silhouetted forms in space. I am inspired by the playful transformation of materials, and what happens when different elements are brought together, and love the process of transforming sheets of hard, cold steel into something delicate and beautiful. I have found that, by making this work, I notice more and more around me, and I hope it inspires this connection and wonder in the viewer too.
I also make smaller sculptural pieces which are more lyrical, with a hint of a narrative.
