Freya Parfitt
Freya Parfitt is a Norwich-based artist and facilitator. Freya’s fine art practice is sound and experience focused, re-contextualising everyday encounters through mediums such as performance, drawing, sound installation and sculpture. Collaboration and community are strong motivators and inspirations in Freya’s practice and are the foundations for her workshop facilitation. Her workshops explore creativity through playfulness, joy and materiality, focusing on the experience of making over the value of outcomes.
Freya graduated from Norwich University of the Arts with a BA (Hons) and an MA in Fine Art. She has exhibited at St Mary’s Works and Anteros in Norwich and at Cromer Artspace on the Prom, and has facilitated workshops at Norwich University of the Arts, City of Norwich School and Mind Aid Festival.
Artist Statement
The primary goal throughout my work is to find joy in the little things, particularly sounds, and how experiential value can be added by re-contextualising them. I am interested in the shape of the sound of a boiling kettle, and in what a toilet flush would sound like interpreted by a pianist.
I use graphic scores as a means of reframing the things I hear, often offering them up for interpretation by performers and musicians to distance the sounds from their origins even further. Collaboration is key in everything I do; it activates the work and makes it more playful, leading to further iterations that can develop into objects, soundscapes or images.
