Caroline Chouler-Tissier

Caroline Chouler-Tissier is a sculptural artist based in Norwich, working in clay, glass, bronze, plastics and wax. She trained at Loughborough College of Art and Design (BA Ceramics, 3D Design) and at the Royal College of Art (MA Ceramics and Glass), and her work is represented by Charles Burnand Gallery.

Her work embodies an acceptance of imperfection and a fascination with intense materiality. It addresses the contemporary destabilising factors one encounters in life: the expression of tension, the processing of personal and environmental grief, and the wider influence of family and social expectation on the discovery of self. Her work with museum artefacts and antiquities led to an exploration of the ambivalence of memory and recorded history, and she is keen to respond to the questions of sustainability that surround the artist's role under increasing environmental pressures.

Her series This Broken World was awarded the Charlotte Fraser Prize in 2024, and in 2026 she was shortlisted for two of the Holt Art Awards, the Mannington Nature Award and the Glass and Ceramic Award.

Artist Statement

I start from the earth and early memories of the deep scent of soil and the joy of digging crumbly dirt, and sticky mud, and of dark gritty outlines to my hands.
