Toby Winterbourn

Toby Winterbourn is an artist blacksmith working from a workshop in the village of North Elmham, Norfolk. He has focused on his own designs since 2009, making sculpture drawn mostly from natural forms, and often taking wild plants and scaling them up.

His work grew out of restoration projects on old gates with intricate floral panels, where he found he enjoyed making the decorative flowers and leaves and decided to make those delicate features the focus of a large sculpture. More recently he has turned to animals, among them octopus, squid, bugs and otters.

He takes on English Heritage and restoration work alongside private and public commissions. His galvanised steel pieces have grown up over more than a decade in the Walled Garden at Felbrigg Hall, in a long collaboration with the head gardener, and he has made work for Pensthorpe and for Sandringham. Christine Walkden commissioned an enormous cow parsley sculpture from him for East Ruston Gardens after featuring his work on the BBC's Glorious Gardens from Above.
