The Munnings Art Museum

Recommended

Munnings' equine and equestrian paintings are celebrated. But the real treat is seeing all the equally masterful non-horse paintings. The picturesque setting and scenic tea room make for a very nice outing when the weather is fine.

The Munnings Art Museum at Castle House in Dedham was Sir Alfred Munnings' home and studio for forty years. It now hosts the only permanent exhibition of his work — around 150 paintings on display each year, drawn from the museum's holdings of his celebrated horse studies, racing scenes and East Anglian landscapes.

Set in three acres of garden by the River Stour in the heart of Constable Country, the museum was opened in 1965 by Munnings' widow Violet, and is now run by The Castle House Trust (registered charity 1161304). The collection is shown in the main house and Munnings' original studio.

A tea room operates on site.
