Viewing Room 11: Alexander Costello
11 Jul 2026 – 25 Jul 2026
The exhibition presents the sculptures created during an art performance by Alexander Costello at Contemporary and Country's viewing room in Woolmarket House, together with the resulting 35-minute film.
Alexander Costello (b. 1976, London) is an award-winning sculptor, video and performance artist who graduated with an MFA from the Slade School in 2001, following a First Class Honours in Fine Art at Middlesex University. Ideas and work are generated through an interest in challenging and exposing the everyday absurdity of perceived normality; the simultaneous pursuit of the infinite and finite; the origin and location of idea; and the exploration of processes that are in themselves the truth in the work, often undermined by a resulting outcome.
"I am tanding in front of a wall" is a reprise of a performance that took place in 2000; for this edition Costello was filmed in front of a wall near Woolmarket House, on Pilot Street, King's Lynn, in the days leading up to the performance. A voluntary donation can be made during the exhibition in support of The Purfleet Trust, supporting people experiencing homelessness.
