Roger Steele

Roger Steele is a visual artist working from Norwich, Norfolk. He trained in Canada, completing a three-year Fine Art Diploma followed by a two-year postgraduate scholarship, and went on to work in the Canadian art world for seven years. Having left England at 19, he returned permanently fourteen years later, and has lived in Norwich for more than thirty years, longer than anywhere else, out of a deep affection for the city and the county.

He has always had a strong connection with the natural world, and in recent years his work has explored how people perceive nature and how societies are destroying the delicate balances that sustain life. He works in acrylic, graphite and coloured pencil, usually on wood, and brings found and natural materials into the work, among them birch bark, dried leaves, roots, lead and discarded plastic. Alongside works that express his fear and anger at the destruction humanity causes, he makes images of how life can be and, in his view, should be.
