Rhona Fleming
Rhona Fleming was born and educated in Scotland. After gaining her architectural qualifications in Glasgow she spent 12 years in practice in London whilst pursuing her fine art interests in drawing and sculpture including a diploma in sculpture at Sir John Cass School of Art. Since moving to Norfolk in 1992, she has been an architect in private practice expanding her activities to include landscape design (Ecology and Landscape UEA), and painting. She completed an MA in Fine Art at Norfolk University of the Arts in 2014 and a M.Sc. with distinction in Architectural Conservation at Strathclyde University in 2019. She was invited to be a professional member of the Society of Scottish Artists and subsequently became a professional member of Visual Arts Scotland in 2025. Having recently decided to park her architectural career she is devoting her time to exploring her art practice.
Fleming’s practice is concerned with the relationship between things. Between ideas, between populated areas and negative space, between colours, textures and shapes, and between words and imagination. Working across painting, collage and assemblage, the medium is selected according to the generative starting point. In painting, this can be some drawing from life, a gestural mark or a ground colour or texture. Each subsequent action is made in response to the last and an iterative process of addition and subtraction ensues. When working with found objects, words, phrases and materials, a similar process is employed yielding a quite different aesthetic but with an underlying continuity of investigation and travel.
In both painting a three dimensional work, Fleming strives to keep the experience fluid and open-ended and as such will rarely provide an explicit description. In this way she believes that the work leaves room for the viewer to complete the narrative, if desired or even felt necessary, leaving it free to inhabit the differing world of differing viewers. In this way, she invites them to consider their own interpretation or to simply enjoy the view. .
