Patrick Wilkins
Patrick Wilkins is originally from Rochester in Kent and has lived in several parts of the UK, including a decade in Manchester and some years in London, as well as travelling widely in the USA. He now lives in the Suffolk village of Ixworth. He has drawn all his life, and his working background is in engineering design and technical illustration; the attention to detail that work demanded is clearly reflected in his drawings.
He has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Mall Galleries and the Turner Contemporary. His awards include the President's Award at the UK Coloured Pencil Society Open Exhibition and Best in Show (Colour) at the Society of Graphic Fine Art Open Exhibition. He was featured in the February 2020 issue of Artists and Illustrators magazine and the April 2023 issue of The Artist magazine, and has appeared on Sky Landscape Artist of the Year (Season 7).
Artist Statement
I'm a self taught coloured pencil artist. I tend to draw urban scenes, usually devoid of people and often after dark. I want the drawings to appear to the viewer like atmospheric film stills so they are left wondering 'What happens next?'.
My biggest influence is the American artist Edward Hopper, my drawings tend to have a 'Hopperesque' feel whether I want them to or not. I'm also a big fan of Film Noir, this is one of the reasons I draw a lot of night scenes.
Other artists whose work also has an impact on me are Andrew Wyeth, Grant Wood, George Shaw and Trevor Grimshaw.
