Nicci Dedman
Nicci Dedman is an East Anglian artist who makes contemporary handcrafted artworks in wire. She works with steel wire of various gauges, building each piece by hand without soldering or welding, so that a single outer layer of wire forms the structure and sets up an interplay between the seen outer surface and the intricate negative space within.
She studied jewellery at Epsom School of Art and Design, spent weekends and summers working at a blacksmith's forge, set up a workshop as a jeweller and worked for some years at a local art gallery. She returned to making after discovering what she could do with chicken wire, and her jewellery and forging skills inform the work.
She exhibits across the region, including the Raveningham Sculpture Trail, the Bayfield Sculpture Trail near Holt, the Norfolk Show art marquee and Walsingham Framing and Gallery, and she teaches workshops.
Artist Statement
My creations derive from a fascination with wire and the forms that can be achieved with a single piece.
I am influenced by the everyday and the simple things in life I love. From my home and workshop I observe the birds, dogs passing by on their walks and the local wildlife in my garden and across the fields. I see things in a 'wire' way, if my imagination is sparked by how a leaf grows or the shape of a vegetable that I have grown, then I need to recreate this in wire.
