Moira Fraser Steele
Moira Fraser Steele has a Masters degree in the History of Art and Design and is a graduate of the Royal College of Art, where she was taught by Sir Christopher Frayling and Charles Saumarez-Smith. Her career embraced the design world, culminating in her appointment as a Director of the Design Council, a post she held for more than seven years. She took up painting on her retirement.
She received the President's Award of the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists in 2013 and the Tindall Award in 2017.
She is a member of Suffolk Art Society and of the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists, and her work is on permanent exhibit at The George Farnham Gallery in Saxmundham.
Artist Statement
Design is all encompassing. It has a distinctive shape or pattern and my background in its world has greatly influenced my pictures.
I paint nature. Simplicity is the essence of my work in water colour.
The collages are about simplicity too. The essence of bird, twig, seeds, and stone. Pattern and shape are again to the fore. I create texture on my papers by working with paints and various media, scraping and flicking paints and inks to develop the correct look. The colour palette for the collages is muted although as the work or subjects develop a more subversive look might become evident.
