Michael Stubbs

Michael Stubbs (born 1961) is a British abstract painter who works between Crownlands Studio in Sizewell, Suffolk, and London. He studied at Bath Academy of Art (BA Fine Art, 1987) and at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he gained an MA in Fine Art (1990) and a PhD (2003) with a thesis titled 'Digital Embodiment in Contemporary Abstract Painting'. His paintings are built up from layered configurations of transparent tinted floor varnishes and opaque household paints, combined with graphic stencils, spray paint and digital posters, so that fragments of signage and text are set one on top of another. He has exhibited internationally in solo and group shows since the early 1990s. Solo exhibitions include Laurent Delaye Gallery, London (2010, 2011); Hollenbach Gallery, Stuttgart (2006, 2015); Cornerstone Gallery, Liverpool Hope University (2017, 2024); Reid Corridor Gallery, Glasgow School of Art (2020); and Palfrey Space, London (2021). Group exhibitions have included Countdown at Chisenhale Gallery, London (1990), the John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize (2004, 2006), Liverpool (2006), and Contemporary Art from the British Council Collection, Brussels (1996). His work is held in public collections including the British Council, the UK Government Art Collection, Goldsmiths University of London, and the Lisse Art Museum in the Netherlands. Since 2020 he has been Reader in Contemporary Painting at the Glasgow School of Art.

Stubbs will have a solo show at The Cut Arts Centre, Halesworth, UK in early 2027.
