Caroline Wright

Caroline Wright is a multidisciplinary artist and practice-based researcher based in Suffolk, working across drawing, printmaking, painting, sound and performance. Her work explores coastal and inland edgelands, and the ways human and nonhuman life meet a changing environment, with a long-standing focus on loss, place attachment and the movement of matter in and out of water. She has walked and swum the Suffolk coast for more than 15 years.

Wright is a doctoral candidate (PhD) at the Royal College of Art, where her research asks whether the practices of drawing, swimming and writing can address the lived experience of rapid coastal erosion on the Suffolk coast. Working largely with 6B pencil on paper at the eroding coastline, she translates direct experience of fluctuation and movement, alongside smaller monoprints, embossed prints and site-specific performance.

She studied for a BA (Hons) Fine Art and an MA Fine Art at Norwich School of Art and Design (now Norwich University of the Arts, 2002). She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has been Programme Leader for Fine Art at the Open College of the Arts, and has lectured and examined at institutions including University College London, Anglia Ruskin University, the University of Greenwich and Liverpool Hope University.

Her awards and support include multiple Arts Council England grants, the Firstsite Collectors Group, Trinity College Cambridge, an a-n bursary, an Artsadmin Artist's Bursary East England Award and the School of Art Tokyo, and she has been nominated for the Bryan Robertson Award. Projects and commissions include The Breath Control Project (Arts Council England, The Coronet Theatre, Cambridge Junction, produced by Artsadmin), On the Wing (The National Trust, Anglesey Abbey), Out of Water for the London 2012 Festival, ITV Creates, Plot, and the Trumpington Meadows public art commission and residency. Her work has been shown at venues including Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery, Somerset House and the Scott Polar Research Institute. She has a studio at Old Jet Arts Centre, Woodbridge, Suffolk.
