Caroline Houchell

Caroline Houchell is a mixed-media artist and printmaker working from a garden studio in North Norfolk. She works with gel plates, making monoprints and monotypes and generating collage papers that she then layers into her mixed-media pieces, building the work up from textures foraged from the landscape around her.

In 2026 she was shortlisted for the Mannington Nature Award, one of the seven Holt Art Awards. She is part of the team at REEF Make & Do in Little Walsingham, where she teaches beginners' and next-steps gel plate printing workshops.

Artist Statement

I am a mixed media artist and printmaker, working from my garden studio in North Norfolk. My work is centred on naturally found textures, to reflect the fleeting in between moments of seasonal change, and connect the audience to natural elements in an increasingly disconnected technological era.

I find peace in the mindful and sensory immersive aspects of my process, starting with foraging for plant materials also delving beneath the surface and unlocking the imperfect beauty of decaying and fallen foliage.

Once I have collected and collated a variety of textures, I use gelplates in my practice which I find an exciting, serendipitous and spontaneous printing method for monoprints and monotypes and creating collage papers to layer within my mixed media work.
