Bob Dellar
Bob Dellar is an arborist and gardener by trade, and brings an intimate knowledge of the natural world to his artwork. A Londoner born and bred, he is equally influenced by the city's structures and rhythms. His paintings explore the tension and harmony inherent in urban and natural environments, resulting in richly coloured, expressionistic landscapes and cityscapes that reward close looking.
His work is held in private collections and has been sold through galleries, art societies, art fairs and online.
Artist Statement
As a kid, I often went shopping with my mum at Walthamstow Market in east London. One day we ended up in an Indian haberdashery shop, I think mum may have been looking for fabric, she made dresses for herself and my sisters. Anyway, as we entered I was immediately struck by the vibrant colours of the sarees hanging on racks and of the fabrics hanging down from the shelves, it was an intensely visceral and memorable experience. That event seemed to open a door in my mind that ignited an appreciation of colour that exists to this day and heavily influences the paintings I produce.
Working predominantly in oils, I build paintings through expressive brushwork, layered colour and instinctive mark-making. Rather than chasing photographic accuracy, I allow colour, texture and gesture to shape the image. Influences from Impressionism, Fauvism and Expressionism can be seen in my work, but my aim is always to create something personal: paintings that sit somewhere between observation and memory.
