Alex Pearl

Alex Pearl (b. 1968, Manchester) is a multimedia artist working across video, animated GIF, kinetic sculpture, film and installation. He studied Fine Art at Birmingham Polytechnic and took an MA in History of Art and Design at what is now Birmingham City University, completing a PhD in 2018 at Manchester Metropolitan University in collaboration with FACT Liverpool, on mechanical breakdown and anthropomorphism. He is Lecturer in Fine Art, Analogue and Digital Sculpture at the University of Suffolk, and has previously taught theory and practice at the Royal College of Art, Ravensbourne University London and the University of Wolverhampton.

Solo exhibitions include Sick Bed at Atlas House (2024), Petting Zoo at Small House Gallery, London (2021), We've Never Heard of this Man in Ipswich (2020), Breakdown at ELAN, Cambridge (2018), Love Machines at The Minories, Colchester (2017), Object Liberation Front at Metal, Liverpool (2016) and a commission for the Whitstable Biennale (2010). His work has been shown in group exhibitions including Quiet Voices at Tate Britain (2010), Playing with Space at Firstsite, Colchester (2013), RSVP: Contemporary Artists at the Foundling Museum, London (2007), the Tatton Park Biennial (2008) and Visions in the Nunnery at Bow Arts, London (2025). His films have screened at festivals internationally, among them the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film, L'Alternativa in Barcelona and the Athens Video Art Festival. He was a selected artist for Escalator Visual Arts, Commissions East, in 2006–7.
