Andrea Hannon

Andrea Hannon is a contemporary artist based in South Norfolk who works across drawing, ceramic sculpture, collage and print. Her practice examines gender, identity and the roles assigned to women by social and cultural expectation. She draws on a wide range of historic and contemporary sources, among them encyclopaedias, magazines, books, found imagery and everyday objects, to make surreal two- and three-dimensional works that question how gendered narratives are constructed, performed and sustained.

At the centre of her work is a continuing interest in the relationship between women and the home. She treats the domestic space not only as a place of labour, care and expectation, but as something bound up with the body itself: like the body, a house is made of interconnected rooms, hidden spaces and intricate internal structures that hold memory, experience and identity. Her work explores how women embody the home and how, in turn, the home becomes an extension of the self.

Born in Coventry in 1982, she studied at Coventry School of Art and Design, Coventry University, where she took a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, an MA in Fine Art and, in 2015, a PhD in Visual Art and Design. She has taught as a sessional lecturer in Fine Art at De Montfort University and in Visual Art and Design at Coventry University, worked as a research assistant in the university's Visual Arts Research group, and was art co-ordinator and arts advisor on healing-environment projects at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire. Since 2015 she has co-directed Ha, an artist-led organisation. She has shown widely in group and solo exhibitions, including at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and Compton Verney, and more recently in Norfolk and Suffolk.
