North House Gallery
Stringently curated and beautifully presented, North House Gallery is undoubtedly one of the top art galleries in the East of England and always worth a visit.
Established in 1999 by Penelope Hughes-Stanton, North House Gallery occupies a Georgian house overlooking the River Stour estuary in Manningtree — the former studio of painter and wood-engraver Blair Hughes-Stanton. The gallery shows frequent and varied exhibitions of paintings, drawings, sculpture, original prints and books by modern and contemporary artists from East Anglia and beyond.
The space extends into a working letterpress workshop with historic printing presses and equipment spanning generations of the Hughes-Stanton family. Current programming has included works on ecological themes, figurative painting and printmaking, mixing established and emerging artists.
