Tom Lamprell: Illuminated by Fire

Tom Lamprell is a Norfolk-based painter whose work is rooted in the people, landscapes and atmosphere of East Anglia. Working principally through portraiture and landscape, he combines close observation with an expressive and often psychologically charged approach to paint.

There is a distinctive tension within Lamprell's work. His subjects are recognisable and frequently drawn from the familiar world around him, yet his paintings resist simple description. Faces, figures and landscapes become vehicles for something less easily defined: atmosphere, character, memory and unease.

His portraits are particularly striking for the way they move beyond conventional likeness. Landscape forms an equally important part of his practice. Lamprell's paintings of Norfolk and the wider East Anglian countryside are not simply topographical records. His handling of paint and choice of technique allow the landscape to become an emotional subject in its own right.

What distinguishes Lamprell is the breadth of his visual language. Portrait and landscape are not treated as separate disciplines but as different ways of investigating the same underlying concerns: the character of a place, the presence of an individual and the emotional charge contained within an apparently ordinary scene.

The exhibition occupies two floors. Downstairs are approximately twenty paintings, including a group of large works produced during the previous six months, alongside earlier paintings dating back around two years. Upstairs are approximately forty drawings, predominantly charcoal and pencil on paper, spanning a decade.
