Kabuki: Japanese Woodblock Prints

The third edition of Gray Area's yearly exhibition of Japanese woodblock prints, drawn from the personal collection of Martin and Kenza Gray. The collection was born out of one chance purchase: Kenza and her father began to collect, and over many years have built a large collection spanning a wide mixture of artists, styles and subjects, each piece bought for the love of it rather than to complete a set.

Kabuki refers to the theatre that was hugely popular in the Edo period and features in many woodblock prints in the collection. The exhibition highlights prints featuring Kabuki scenes and famous actors, alongside landscapes and manga pages, with works on display and for sale by masters such as Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kunisada.
