Marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of Suffolk-born artist John Constable, this exhibition traces the emergence of the British landscape painting tradition through three of its greatest exponents: Gainsborough, Turner and Constable. Key works include Gainsborough's Landscape with Cattle, a Young Man Courting a Milkmaid (not shown in the UK since 1952), Turner's large-scale watercolour Abergavenny Bridge, and Constable's oil sketch Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows. The display culminates in Constable's The Leaping Horse, on loan from the Royal Academy and shown in Suffolk for the first time, alongside accompanying displays by David Dawson and Kate Giles.
