Every Face Tells a Story: Sue Evans & Maurice Young

10 Nov 2026 - 15 Nov 2026

An exhibition of portrait photography by Sue Evans and Maurice Young.

Despite their individual styles, Sue and Maurice share a fascination with people and the many different stories that a portrait can tell. The photographs on display are the result of careful planning, creative collaboration and a shared enthusiasm for making distinctive and engaging images.

Sue's interest in photography began when her father gave her a Kodak camera at the age of eight. For twelve years, she worked professionally as a wedding photographer. She has gained photographic distinctions from several of the UK's most prestigious photographic organisations. Since joining the Norwich and District Photographic Society three years ago, she has developed a growing interest in studio and portrait photography.

Maurice has pursued photography seriously since joining the Norwich and District Photographic Society more than twenty years ago. He is interested in how light, location and atmosphere transform an ordinary scene into something memorable. Recently, he has developed a growing passion for portraiture and studio work. At the Society's Studio Group, he explores how lighting, styling, clothing and setting come together to create images with a sense of story.

Sue and Maurice have worked together on numerous studio shoots, photographing models in different locations. Each shoot begins with the development of an idea, followed by decisions about its theme, clothing, setting and lighting. For them, it is unexpected moments of character, expression or movement that produce the most memorable photographs.

The images in this exhibition reflect both the photographers' individual approaches and the creative vision they share.

The gallery is accessible, with ramps available on request and a disabled toilet in The Merchant's House next door.
