John Hoyland: A Modern Master of Colour and Expression

A one-day exhibition at the Aldeburgh Beach Lookout devoted to John Hoyland RA (1934-2011), featuring six unseen works.

Hoyland was one of the leading British painters of his generation and one of the most inventive and dynamic abstract painters of the post-war period. Over more than half a century his art and attitudes constantly evolved, and a distinctive artistic personality emerged, concerned with colour, painterly drama, both excess and control, grandeur and, above all, the vehement communication of feeling.

His career was decisively influenced in the late 1950s and 1960s by American Abstract Expressionism, but he absorbed and deflected those influences to set his own path. He preferred not to be called an abstract painter, finding the term too calculating, and remained a life-long proponent of non-figurative imagery, which held for him the potential for the most advanced depth of feeling and meaning.
