Tina Hagley
Tina Hagley is a painter working from her studio in Thorndon. Her paintings use acrylic on both canvas and paper. Collage is an integral part of her process.
Born in Sunderland, she studied at Lancaster College of Art, Leicester College of Art and Design, and Goldsmiths College, University of London, and was artist in residence at Gregynog for the University of Wales, where her work is in the collection.
She taught and worked in London, latterly as head of art at Crofton School, then taught art in Suffolk at Diss, Ipswich and Eye, and was an Edexcel art and design moderator for GCSE and A level. She takes part in Suffolk Open Studios.
Artist Statement
For me, painting is a visceral and physical process. I work intuitively and quickly, often on several pieces simultaneously. Images evolve, dissolve and cross fertilise as I work. Collaged elements have developed more recently.
My painting process is archaeological. I excavate primordial forms and shapes relating to the human body both on a physical and subconscious level.
The structures underlying my work are: human anatomy, natural forms and detritus suggestive of anatomical features.
The anatomical elements are constantly re-worked and become absorbed into the final image. For a painting to be complete, it must have developed its own meaning, be as powerful as I can make it and, most importantly, alive.
