Ruth Philo

Ruth explores abstraction through colour, light, and surface. Her paintings are often site-specific, emerging from walking and a deep connection with place. They embody both internal and external sensory experiences, distilling these moments through the physical process of painting.

Exhibiting widely in the UK and abroad, Ruth's work has been selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Jerwood Drawing Prize, and British Council exhibitions in China, Poland, and Romania. She regularly undertakes international artist residencies, including projects in China, Portugal, and Iceland, and was selected for the Mark Rothko International Painting Symposium and Residency at the Rothko Museum in Daugavpils, Latvia.

An active member of Contemporary British Painting, Ruth holds an MA in Fine Art from Norwich University of the Arts and BA History of Art from the University of Warwick. Alongside her studio practice, she hosts the podcast 'A Geography of Colour', interviewing a different painter each episode about their personal relationship with colour, and runs a small creative residency, 'Pasture Project Space', from her live/work space in Sudbury. Her paintings are held in international collections across Europe, Asia, and the US, and are available directly through the artist as well as via Rise Art.
