Alex Waylett

Alex Waylett divides her time between teaching at Elm Farm, Colchester and developing her own practice from her home in Hadleigh, Suffolk. At Elm Farm Studio she hosts a diverse range of art and craft workshops and longer courses, as well as teaching machine embroidery and textile art.

Alex combines her illustrative background with sculptural machine embroidery, capturing both colourful still life imagery and coastal themes. Her textural and often embellished artwork, presented under glass, focuses on the diverse range of marine life found in and on East Anglian shores. Three dimensional stitched oyster, mussel and urchin shells take centre stage, often mounted alongside her delicate watercolour illustrations. While often abstract representations, she enjoys creating collections and groups of shells mimicking the old style vintage illustrations and etchings.
