Hayley Field
Hayley Field is a contemporary artist whose practice spans painting, drawing and installation. Through playful, modular works that can be reconfigured, she explores ideas of process and connection. Utilising everyday materials and a handmade approach, she makes work that challenges hierarchies.
Raised on the outskirts of London, Field studied BA (Hons) Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art before completing an MA in Video at Middlesex University. Now based in Suffolk, she works from a studio in a boatyard overlooking the River Deben.
She has exhibited widely, with solo exhibitions at 303 Projects, Lowestoft, and The Cut, Halesworth and group exhibitions at venues such as The Cut, Asylum Studios, Christchurch Mansion, Norwich Castle, APT, and Studio 1.1, London. Her work is held in the Ipswich Borough Council Collection.
She is part of the collaborative Obscure Secure, whose practice-based research projects focus on twentieth-century women artists in collections. Working with institutions including Christchurch Mansion (Colchester and Ipswich Museums), The Red House (Britten Pears Arts), and Towner Eastbourne, Obscure Secure explores questions of visibility, process and representation. This complements and enriches Field's individual practice.
Artist Statement
I am a painter and installation artist. My work in inclusive participatory arts for over 30 years has influenced my solo and collaborative practice. My need to navigate and process the world in an experiential and intuitive way is central to my practice. Using a spontaneous approach, I draw from observations, ideas and experience - connecting inner and outer worlds - to explore tension, contrast and control. My interest in colour and composition extends beyond drawing and painting to make installations from modular pieces of work.
