Peter Day

Peter Day is a self-taught artist, sculptor, engineer and welder who works under the name Rain-E-Days. Having combined a career in design and engineering in the rail sector with a passion for working in metal, he developed his skills to make sculpture for display outdoors.

His work has a contemporary feel, shaped by his own experiences, by nature and by a contemplative view of the world around him.

Based in Sudbury, in the heart of Gainsborough and Constable country, he works from his own studio. His main material is mild steel, to which he adds stone, glass and wood to enhance or support a piece. Each work is finished to delay or prevent oxidisation, depending on the piece, though he often puts that natural process to work to achieve unusual finishes.

Alongside his steel sculpture, he makes mosaics in slate and metal, often set with gold or silver leaf, and is a member of BAMM, the British Association for Modern Mosaic.

As well as making his own pieces, he works closely with clients on commissions, advising on how best to display a sculpture in its chosen setting. In 2024 he was longlisted in the sculpture category of the VAA Artist of the Year awards.

Artist Statement

My work is inspired by the natural world, with an introspective twist on how we interact with our inner self.
