Barbara Bernard

Barbara Bernard is a painter in oils based in Ditchingham, Norfolk, working from a studio in her garden.

American by birth, she came to England in the 1970s and stayed, moving from London to Norfolk. She was a silkscreen printmaker for many years before taking up oils, and says the printmaking still informs the painting, though she was glad to leave behind the limits of a technical medium.

She has exhibited with the New English Art Club at the Mall Galleries in London, shows regularly at the Southwold Gallery in Suffolk and the Ferini Gallery at Pakefield, and opens her studio each May with the Harleston and Waveney Art Trail.

Artist Statement

My style is unashamedly realistic, but always, I hope, slightly unconventional. My subject matter is from the real world around me. What interests me most is the fall of light and shadow on things.

I enjoy the challenge of painting outdoors, but only when there is sunlight and shadow to paint. And sometimes that perfect combination of light and shade is so fleeting that I have to capture it with a camera and work it up into a pleasing composition back in my studio.
