Alice Thomson
Alice Thomson is an artist and illustrator who lives and works in Cambridge. Her work is inspired by the city and its surrounding countryside, and by her travels further afield, responding to landscape, coast and architecture through drawing and painting. She specialises in mixed media landscapes, cityscapes and still life.
She studied Illustration at Harrow Art College, and her work developed as reportage, drawing directly and spontaneously from life. She carries a sketchbook and camera with her at all times to capture a place and its essence, and her paintings grow out of these on-site sketches, using line, mark-making and colour with an expressive quality. She qualified as an art and design teacher with a PGCE from Cambridge University in 2006, taught in schools for over ten years across all key stages, and now teaches adults and children from her home studio.
Her work is represented by Cambridge Open Studios, Cambridge Contemporary Art, The Gallery Norfolk in Cromer and the Carina Haslam Gallery, and has featured in local Cambridge magazines. She takes commissions, including specific scenes, cityscapes and portraits, her studio and gallery are open to visitors by appointment, and she is an active member of the Cambridge Drawing Society.
Artist Statement
Experimenting with different techniques and materials with no strict rules, I enjoy looking for new and surprising effects. I work in a combination of collage, ink, printing, crayons and paints (gouache, oil and acrylic), sticks and pencils, adding layers to add interest to my compositions until it feels complete. My work speaks of the sense of places.
