Beecroft Art Gallery

The building has a heterogenous, sometimes chaotic, feel, so go when there is a very good temporary exhibition on. Luckily, there are many of those.

— The Editors

The Beecroft Art Gallery is Southend’s principal visual arts institution and one of the cultural anchors of South Essex. Housed in the city’s former Central Library building, it combines a significant permanent collection with a lively and ambitious programme of temporary exhibitions. The collection spans more than 2,000 works, ranging from 17th-century Dutch paintings and Victorian masterpieces to modern and contemporary art, with notable holdings by artists including Constable, Rossetti and Edward Lear.

While the permanent collection is impressive, the gallery’s greatest strength lies in its ever-changing exhibition programme. Throughout the year, the Beecroft presents a diverse range of exhibitions that frequently spotlight artists from South Essex and the wider East of England, providing an important platform for both emerging and established regional talent. The gallery is also home to the long-running Essex Open Exhibition, a cornerstone of the county’s artistic calendar.

Fashion and textiles form a distinctive and important strand of the Beecroft’s programming. The gallery houses Southend Museums’ extensive fashion and costume collections and regularly stages exhibitions exploring dress, design and social history. From historic couture to contemporary fashion, these exhibitions broaden the gallery’s appeal and reinforce its role as one of the most dynamic cultural venues in Essex.
