Paintings Lost to Suffolk: Hugh Belsey MBE
19 Nov 2026
Most of the paintings in Moyse's Hall and Christchurch Mansion have come from historic houses. However, there are portraits by great artists such as Reynolds, Gainsborough and Romney, and paintings of different subjects by Wright of Derby, Stubbs and Cimabue, that have escaped the county. This talk will tour the county seeking out pictures that are now further afield.
Hugh Belsey was Curator of Gainsborough's House in Sudbury for 23 years, where he built up a collection of the artist's work. He was awarded an MBE for his services to museums and left the museum in 2004. He wrote an award-winning catalogue of portraits painted by Thomas Gainsborough, published in 2019. He now works freelance, giving opinions about 18th-century paintings, curating exhibitions, writing and lecturing.
The talk is followed by a Q&A. Tickets can also be booked through The Apex Box Office on 01284 758000.
