Miranda Boulton: Chain of Flowers

Chain of Flowers presents new paintings by Cambridge-based artist Miranda Boulton, whose practice explores memory and time through the traditions of still life and abstraction. For this show she drew inspiration from the Norwich School painters Emily Stannard and Eloise Harriet Stannard, beginning with oil studies made from the memory of historical still lifes before working onto canvas. Built up and scraped back in layers, her surfaces combine thick impasto, blurry gestures, ribbon-like brushstrokes, fine detail and sprayed paint, so each work keeps an oblique trace of its historical source while finding its own rhythm.
