Caroline Evans: The Landscape

Caroline Evans is an East Anglian painter fascinated by landscape, both external and internal, who works largely out of doors in an Abstract Expressionist idiom. Her practice interrogates the place of the Romantic Sublime in the contemporary world, responding to the countryside through gestural mark-making, photography and the collecting of objects and detritus, which she reworks in the studio across paint and mixed media. This body of work challenges conventional readings of the rural, weaving in questions of politics, history, culture and the environment through an emphasis on scale, form and materiality.
