Sylvia Paul
Sylvia Paul is a painter and textile artist who has exhibited for nearly fifty years across the UK and is regularly represented at international art fairs. She studied painting at Colchester School of Art and at Hockerill College of Education, taught briefly, then committed to painting full time. Her oil paintings are worked with a knife in a free, expressive style, with landscape and still life as recurring subjects; following visits to Japan her collages in particular became more abstract, often drawn from memory.
She has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and at The Mall Galleries in London. Sylvia has had many solo shows including three in Japan. She has many paintings in Private Collections worldwide. She was commissioned to create a large painting for the Omaze Devon house. As well as her garden paintings in oil or acrylic she also creates mixed media collage paintings.
Since 2016 Sylvia has also been creating textile art. She is a member of Art Textiles: Made in Britain and exhibits her textiles with the group across the UK. In Spring 2026 Sylvia had a solo textile exhibition at The Sunbury Embroidery Gallery in Sunbury on Thames. Sylvia takes part in Dovercourt Open Studios every year.
