Lindsay Harris

Lindsay Harris is based in Suffolk, having moved from London in 1984. Having studied Surface Design at Chelsea School of Art from 1973 to 1976, she gained a Certificate in Education at Garnett College, Roehampton, in 1978 and a BA (Hons) by Independent Study at Suffolk College in 1994.

From 1979 to 1984 she taught visual and three-dimensional studies part-time in various colleges, including Ealing, Richmond and Southend, while developing her work.

On moving to Suffolk she taught at Suffolk College, transferring to the BA Graphic Design course from around 1994 until 2010. She is a long-term member of Ipswich Art Society and the Suffolk Group, of which she was Chair for seven years.

Her early work was three-dimensional and concerned with geometric form and the effects of light, using a variety of materials. However, in Suffolk (and initially lacking a studio) she turned at first to atmospheric, "sense of place" drawings of still lives and empty interiors such as redundant hospitals, reintroducing 3D to her practice shortly after the year 2000.

Artist Statement

Whether in two-dimensional images or 3D constructions, my work has always had geometry and abstraction at its core as the unifying structure and evocation of inner meaning.

In a sculptural object it's a starting-point: something which might begin to suggest some kind of human activity, mood or metaphor. In the drawings, it's what I look for to give structure to the composition and evoke an underlying atmosphere or scenario.
