Linda Theophilus
Linda Theophilus came to making after a career as an exhibition organiser and curator, training as an artist at the Kent Institute of Art and Design, where she took a first class BA in 2004 and an MA in 2005. She is a studio holder at Cuckoo Farm Studios in Colchester.
Her work focuses on particular places and their histories. She often uses materials collected from the sites themselves, and their impermanence is an essential part of the work, which ranges from temporary large-scale installations to small framed pieces. She aims to reveal aspects of the space or place that go un-noticed or are invisible, using, for example, dyes made from a location's plants, collected dust and detritus, shadows, air movement and the wind. She develops ideas through large drawings in charcoal, graphite and raw pigment, and is currently taking the Greek myths of the Fates and the Graces as starting points.
She has shown at North House Gallery in Manningtree, in Between Ourselves, a project of work by Chinese and United Kingdom artists shown in Lowestoft and Ipswich, at The Minories in Colchester, and frequently at Cuckoo Farm in the Benham Gallery's ongoing programme of small group shows. Following on from Winter Solstice, a project exploring the interaction between fine art and contemporary dance, she is currently researching other performative drawing collaborations.
