Freya Gascoyne
Freya Gascoyne is an interdisciplinary artist based between Essex and London, working across painting, drawing, sculpture and installation, performance, writing and participatory research. An exploration of identity, specifically queerness and gender, underpins most facets of their practice. Their colourful, semi-abstract, semi-figurative paintings reveal the expansive universes created through queer bodies loving and living.
Participatory research is integral to Freya's work: they facilitate workshops at Firstsite and the Whitechapel Gallery, work as a freelance research consultant, and collaborate with the Museum of Transology. They are also part of the WHET collective.
Freya received a Firstsite Bursary Award in 2024 and took part in the Distese: Queerness Beyond Borders residency in Pescara, Italy, in 2025. Recent exhibitions include Better Together and the Summer Exhibition at The Minories, Colchester; Wyrd Flora at Firstsite, Colchester; the Annual Open at Southwark Park Galleries, London; and Encountering Ecosystems at The Gallery LIS, Whitechapel. Their writing appears in the Between Queer Teeth anthology (t'Artpress, 2025) and in t'Art Magazine.
